Sunflower Music School

Description

This is a series of sessions for those who have a basic knowledge of how to play the ukulele, but are interested in further developing their abilities.

We will learn more challenging chords, slightly more involved songs, and will work on some fingerpicking and playing songs together using tablature.

Learners will ideally be familiar with basic strumming patterns on the ukulele, some of the more foundational chords (C, Am, F, G, G7, D) have basic understanding of how to read chord charts and ukulele tabulature. As with other sessions offered by Sunflower Music School, the material and pacing of our gatherings will be tailored to the level, skill and interests of the participants - you get to suggest the songs we learn!

If you do not have a ukulele please do not worry – Ukuleles can be provided for the for the entire duration of the workshop for a cost of $20 (one-time fee).

Directions
We’re located very close to the Fernwood Square intersection, on the 2^nd floor of the Fernwood Community and Arts Association.

Once you find the entry to the building (see images below), press the buzzer for Suite #2 / Sunflower Music School, and we will let you into the building.

Vehicle Parking

There is a limited amount of free street parking on most of the streets off Fernwood Road. There are also a few parking spots, including one accessible parking spot in front of the FCAA building on Fernwood Road (northbound direction). The image below highlights where free street parking spots exist.

Other modes of transportation

There are multiple bike parking stalls in the vicinity of Fernwood Square. It is also possible to get to us on the No. 22 bus (stop right across road from our building).

Accessibility

The FCAA building, is, unfortunately, not accessible. There are 18 stairs leading up to our suite. The stairs are wide and sturdy, with a very solid banister.

If you have accessibility needs that prevent you from going up the stairs, please let us know! We have access to rent accessible space within the FCAA building, and will work with you to accommodate any accessibility needs you may have.

Meet your instructor

Arkady has lived in Victoria since 2015. He studied guitar performance at the University of Alaska and music history at the University of Victoria. His favorite Genres include folk, jazz, bluegrass and fingerstyle. He has been teaching in Canada and abroad for over 20 years.

Arkady performs as a bassist with Victoria based Country Duo Catscratch Fever. Since 2015, Arkady has also performed on bass and guitar with various jazz bands in the Anchorage (AK) area, gypsy jazz group Swing49 and the Chad Meyer Trio.

Through his music teaching business, Sunflower Music School, (http://www.sunflowermusicschool.ca) Arkady offers private and small group instruction in ukulele, guitar and bass to learners of all ages and all levels. Arkady strives to create a supportive, fun environment for learning which is tailored to students’ needs, knowledge and interests.
